Entre los diversos “ismos” que algunos (ocasionalmente incluso yo) pueden usar para nombrar las formas en que encuentro mis mundos, hay uno que elegí tratar por sí mismo, y es el ateísmo. La etiqueta “atea” ciertamente se aplica a mí, ya que no creo en ningún dios y, más allá de esto, no tengo ningún deseo de tal ser en los mundos que experimento. Pero como Stirner señaló hace más de 170 años, muchos ateos son personas tan piadosas, y puede ser embarazoso asociarse con creyentes tan dogmáticos.
No es difícil distinguir a los ateos piadosos; los signos son obvios: una necesidad obsesiva de evangelizar; interminables intentos de demostrar que son tan morales como\dots{} los instigadores de cruzadas e inquisiciones, los perpetradores de jihads\footnote{Del islam, concepto que representa una obligación religiosa de los musulmanes. De hecho, no son más ateos que el cristiano que no cree en Alá, el musulmán que no tiene fe en Brahma, el hindú que rechaza a Ahura Mazda, el zoroastriano\footnote{De Zoroastrismo, religión y filosofía basadas en las enseñanzas del profeta iraní Zoroastro. (N.T.)} que no tiene uso para Yahvé o el judío que niega la Trinidad. Estos piadosos ateos simplemente rechazan a los dioses de todas las religiones, excepto las suyas: el racionalismo, el positivismo, el humanismo, el marxismo\dots{} Entonces, si “ateo” es un término suficientemente amplio para incluir a aquellos que continúan aferrándose a alguna abstracción como universal o absoluta, como proveedor de “la respuesta” o “la verdad”, entonces quizás necesite un término más fuerte para expresar mi incredulidad. Crecí con un dios (“el dios de mis padres”, como dicen los fieles), y ese dios casi me mata. Pero en ese mismo momento, me di cuenta de que tenía una opción. Podría elegir matar a mi dios. Podría elegir vivir mi vida, crearme a mí mismo y a mis mundos sin un dios. Y así lo hice y he seguido haciendo durante los últimos cuarenta años. Y he encontrado una belleza y una maravilla en mi vida y en los mundos salvajes encuentro que las respuestas fáciles, la creencia entorpecedora, la insensatez de la fe solo pueden sofocar.
